Truck spills cheese ball containers onto California highway

Traffic on a Los Angeles-area freeway faced a salty obstacle when a truck lost a pallet of cheese ball containers into the roadway.

The California Highway Patrol confirmed the pickup truck lost about 120 containers of cheese balls on the 105 Freeway in Lynwood shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Video from the scene shows Utz cheese balls littering the westbound lanes.

CHP officials said extra traffic delays were caused by drivers stopping on the freeway to find and retrieve undamaged cheese ball containers.

Ring lost in New York lake found by metal detectorists 28 years later

A pair of metal detecting hobbyists found a class ring at a New York lake that turned out to have been lost during a day on the water 28 years earlier.

Michael Siegle and Dylan LaPort said they were treasure hunting at the Great Sacandaga Lake when they found the Red Creek High School ring from the Class of 1988.

"We heard the tone on the metal detector and then just flipped over a rock, and it was just sitting there," LaPort told WRGB-TV.

LaPort posted photos of the ring on Facebook in the hopes of finding its owner.

After some time went by without any leads, the men contacted Red Creek High School and spoke with a secretary, who quickly identified the ring's owner as a former classmate, Kim Rasbeck.

Rasbeck said she had lost the ring during a day out on the lake with friends 28 years ago.

"I told them, I said, I will Venmo you, whatever it costs to send me the ring back," Rasbeck said. "And they wanted no part of that. They're like, no, we just want to get the ring back to you."

The men said they enjoy being able to reunite people with their lost items.

"Glad I could get it back to her," Siegle said. "I mean, that's what we do out here. Find rings, give them back, and anything else along the way is just a bonus."

S.C. man amasses collection of over 2,000 pairs of socks

A South Carolina man attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of socks said he has surpassed 2,000 pairs.

North Augusta resident Darryl Parker, a retired firefighter and paramedic, said his sock collection started with a Father's Day gift, and then he started receiving more pairs for occasions including birthdays and anniversaries.

"My wife was like, 'Yo, listen, you got so many socks here...' my grandkids came and told me... 'how about we try for the Guinness World Record?'" Parker told WRDW/WAGT. "I was like, 'You know what? Let's do it.'"

The current record is held by retired CBS Philadelphia news anchor Jim Donovan, whose collection was tallied at 1,531 unique pairs in 2025.

Parker said he already has over 2,000 pairs, but he is planning to continue collecting until the end of the year before submitting his socks to Guinness World Records for official verification.

He said new socks donated from members of the public will be given to local shelters once he has secured the record.

Mysterious vanishing island reappears on British Columbia reservoir

A mysterious island that appeared and disappeared on a British Columbia reservoir has been found more than 18 miles away from where it was previously spotted.

The tree-covered island in the Williston Reservoir, north of MacKenzie, was spotted by residents and confirmed by utility company B.C. Hydro using satellite data from July 20.

Officials said the island had vanished from satellite imagery by Aug. 5.

B.C. Hyro said on social media Monday that the island has been located along the shoreline, in a position more than 18 miles from where it was originally seen.

B.C. Hydro spokesman Bob Gammer previously explained the island likely formed over the course of several years. He said driftwood can accumulate along the shore, and plants and trees can then take root in the decomposing wood, creating a landmass atop the water.

He said the island likely broke free from the shore due to the rising water levels in the reservoir.

B.C. Hydro warned visitors to the reservoir to keep a safe distance from the unstable island.

"It isn't an island so much as a loose collection of logs and decaying woody debris. The surface is unstable and unsafe to land on or climb across. For your safety, please keep your distance," the company said on social media.

Talented dog jumps across backs of 56 people to break world record

An Alberta baseball team hosted a Guinness World Record attempt involving an Australian shepherd jumping across the backs of 56 people.

The Edmonton Riverhawks, an amateur summer collegiate team in the West Coast League, hosted the record attempt for the most jumps between people by a dog in one minute during a June 14 game.

Chardonnay, a 4-year-old Australian shepherd belonging to dog trainer Jennifer Fraser, bounded across the backs of 56 fans arranged in a straight line in the outfield.

The record's rules set a time limit of one minute, but Chardonnay managed to set the record in just 16 seconds.

"We're looking at breaking it again," Fraser told The Washington Post.

Illinois man's birthday present wins him a $1M lottery prize

An Illinois man won a $1 million lottery jackpot from a ticket he received as a gift from a friend at his birthday party.

The Bradwood man told Illinois Lottery officials his wife threw him a big party for his birthday, and during the event a friend handed him an envelope with several lottery tickets inside.

"I never would've imagined actually winning," the man said.

One ticket, for the Aug. 8 Lotto Million 2 drawing, wound up scoring a $1 million prize by matching the numbers 11-17-22-26-36-45.

"I didn't even think I won anything at first glance," he said. "I had one of my friends check the ticket. He must've also overlooked it, because he said I only won a grand. I thought, 'Wow, a thousand bucks isn't bad, this was a great day.' But I was not prepared for what came next."

The man and his wife took the ticket to an Illinois Lottery prize center to claim what he thought would be $1,000.

"We told the staff that I won a thousand dollars," he said. "One of the workers smiled and said 'Sir, you actually won a million dollars.' I was in complete shock. My wife even started tearing up."

The man scored an additional $2 for matching two numbers on another line.

The birthday celebrant said his winnings will fund his annual trip to visit family in Florida, as well as possibly a new car and a golf cart.

"We'll be going on a cruise to celebrate our 40th anniversary and my kids' birthdays," he said. "I told them, 'Dad's paying.'"

Deer spends time in Florida home's bathroom, swims in the pool

A large deer found its way inside a Florida home and spent some time in the bathroom before taking a plunge into the backyard pool.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office shared a video to social media showing the buck deputies discovered when they arrived at the home Aug. 23.

The video shows the deer looking back at deputies from next to the toilet inside the home.

The deputies and home residents rearranged some furniture inside the home to create a path for the buck to make its way back outside.

Deputies used a pool brush to guide the animal to the yard, where it promptly plunged into the swimming pool.

Large, aggressive lizard wrangled in Mass. parking lot

A Massachusetts animal control officer responding to a report of an exotic lizard in a parking lot ended up wrangling a large, aggressive mangrove monitor.

Burlington Police Animal Control said on social media that "what started as a report of a lizard in a Burlington parking lot turned into the safe capture of a mangrove monitor."

Jamie Jeffrey, Burlington's animal control officer, arrived on the scene to find the mangrove monitor, a species native to Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia, in the wheel well of a vehicle.

"It didn't want to be captured, let's put it that way," Jeffrey told the Boston Globe. "For people who have a hobby with reptiles, this is a kind of reptile you have to be very knowledgeable to care for ... [it's] on the aggressive side."

Jeffrey called Cambridge Animal Control for "moral support" and, with their help, was able to capture the lizard and take it to Rainforest Reptile Shows for care.

The monitor was found to be in good health, but has a small head wound that Jeffrey said would be consistent with an escape from a cage.

Jeffrey said the species is not legal to keep as pets in Massachusetts without a permit. Officials are now trying to find the lizard's owner to determine whether the pet was being kept legally.

"This definitely was somebody's pet that they cared about," she said. "We're hoping someone does come forward."

Italian airport authorities find crocodile head in man's luggage

An Italian man is under investigation after authorities at Turin's Caselle airport discovered the head of an endangered crocodile concealed in his luggage.

Officials from Italy's financial police squad in Turin said in a statement that the man was arriving from Miami by way of Istanbul. The financial police have been cooperating with customs officials for increased checks regarding trade in protected and endangered species, the statement said. Authorities found the head during a search of the passenger's luggage.

"Specifically, the reptile's head had been dried and wrapped in ordinary wrapping paper, thus evading security in the country of departure," the statement said.

Border authorities seized the head and placed the passenger under investigation for allegedly smuggling a specimen belonging to a protected species without the proper certificate or license.

If convicted, the man could face a fine of 20,000 to 200,000 euros or a prison term of six months to a year.

Crocodiles are among the animals protected by the Washington Convention, a global agreement signed in 1973 to safeguard endangered plants and animals from illegal trade.

Italy is a hub for illegal trade in exotic animals, The Guardian reported, much of it based in organized crime. However, it also noted that tourists may bring home items such as dried crocodile heads as souvenirs, unaware that they are illegal. The heads are commonly found in souvenir shops throughout Florida.

Disc golfing foursome break Guinness World Record for speed

A quartet of disc golfers in Idaho said it took them 60 attempts to finish a hole in a Guinness World Record-breaking 44.31 seconds.

David Rush, who holds more than 200 Guinness World Records titles, teamed up with his friend, Travis Davidson, and Davidson's sons, Anders and Oliver, to take on the title for the fastest hole of disc golf by a team of four.

Rush said Guinness World Records rules required the course to be at least 200 meters long, so they selected a PDGA-certified hole in Mallard Park.

Rush said the day started with dozens of failures.

"On our 60th attempt, everything finally aligned. I sent a solid drive down the fairway, Travis followed up with a great shot, and Oliver kept the momentum moving. Anders then stepped up and chucked it right down by the target," Rush wrote online. "At that point, it was all hustle: I had to sprint 41 grueling seconds uphill, grab the disc, and lock it into the basket."
